Can Women Have It All? Series

Updated: Feb 29

Spotlight #2: Jaerey Velasco

Next up in my series to celebrate Mother’s Day, I am talking to another incredible mother. Why am I having these conversations? Because I believe we're all in the same boat, trying to have it all by balancing career, family and personal aspirations. It is amazing to see the struggles and triumphs of women from all walks of life; a high-powered nine-to-five, creating a business, or managing the demands of a growing family. These ladies wear many hats - from entrepreneurs, accountants, lawyers, branding consultants, to business owners. They are wives and mothers. But beyond their titles, they're just super cool individuals.

Did you miss my first conversation? Check out what Janani Jayachandar, an accountant, business owner and mother, had to say. Next up in our series is Jaerey Velasco. You might know Jaerey as a family lawyer or partner at her firm, but she is also an active member of our Mum’s Meet Ups and another super inspiring individual. Here’s a bit more about Jaerey’s background.

Jaerey Velasco is a seasoned solicitor admitted in Hong Kong in 2013 and promoted to partner at Payne Clermont Velasco in 2015. Specializing in family law, Jaerey handles a broad spectrum of cases, both local and international, encompassing pre- and post-nuptial agreements, divorce proceedings, child custody matters, and financial settlements. She also possesses significant expertise in commercial and civil litigation, representing clients in various courts, including the District Court, High Court, and Court of Appeal.

In addition to her legal career, Jaerey is actively involved in several professional and community organisations. Since 2017, she has served as the President of the De La Salle Alumni Association – One La Salle Hong Kong Chapter and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Family Law. Furthermore, Jaerey holds the position of Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Hong Kong Collaborative Practice Group since 2022. In addition to her demanding professional commitments, Jaerey is a devoted mother to three children—Percy (5), Jose (3), and Penelope (6 months)—and cares for two dogs, Benji and Suzie.

How do you navigate the balance between your career, family, and personal aspirations?

I take it one day at a time. This also means segregating my time and energies: ensuring full focus on work while in the office and dedicated family time when at home. Additionally, I carve out moments for “me time”, to get the personal relaxation and self-care I need and deserve

Can you share specific strategies or routines that have helped you maintain this balance?

Planning is integral to my approach. I meticulously organise my schedule using separate calendars for work, personal, and family commitments, each colour-coded for clarity. Communication is essential in trying to achieve a work-life balance – this is applicable to both work and family.

What challenges have you encountered in trying to "have it all," and how have you overcome them?

Navigating trying "having it all" presents its fair share of challenges. There are some days that I am overwhelmed with everything that I have to do. To overcome these challenges, I've adopted a multifaceted approach. Firstly, I recognise the importance of seeking support from my network. I reach out to people who could help with the tasks and then delegate it to them. This could be my colleagues, partner or even my kids!   Additionally, I've learned the value of prioritisation. I make sure to review the tasks at hand and prioritise them according to urgency and importance.

In your journey, how important have support systems, such as family, friends, or workplace support, been in achieving a sense of balance?

One advice that I always give to my friends, colleagues, and clients is “Do not be afraid to ask for advice and help”.

In my journey, I've learned to value the importance of having a strong support system comprising family, friends, and colleagues. I'm fortunate to have the unwavering support of my husband, as well as the guidance and encouragement of my extended family, friends, and colleagues. Their presence and support are very important because it helps me go through my personal and corporate life, successfully.

How have Mothers' events like Mum’s Meet Ups helped you out?

Attending Mum Meet Ups organised by Vannessa has been incredibly beneficial for me. Being surrounded by strong and passionate women who are facing similar circumstances provides a refreshing sense of solidarity. These gatherings offer a safe space where we can openly share our experiences without fear of judgment from fellow mothers. It's empowering to connect with like-minded individuals and gain insights from their journeys.

Check out our upcoming events and like Janani and Jaerey, join a supportive community of like-minded women that will help you in your personal and professional life.
